Personal Goals
I have many personal goals and ambitions in life. My wife and I are currently working toward visiting all 50 states together. We have seen 20 in the five-and-a-half years we’ve been together, and have plans to see at least one, if not two more this summer. Traveling has always been a passion of mine and I love to bring those experiences back to the classroom with me whenever I can. We’re also hoping to start a family in the near future and would like to become first-time homeowners as well. We’re subconsciously preparing for a busy next couple of years and by receiving my degree now, I will have more time to devote to family. I don’t anticipate coaching for too many more years, so this added degree will supplement my salary to replace the money I currently receive for that time.
Professional Goals
I have always planned to complete two Master’s degrees in my time as an educator. This serves a dual purpose for me: 1) increasing my salary and providing more opportunities for me and my family, and 2) increasing my effectiveness as a teacher. In my short time as a teacher, the one thing that has become more and more apparent each year is that there’s always more to learn. The better I understand my material, the better I am able to explain it to students. This not only helps them understand it better, but also builds trust between us as they see me as an individual who is able to answer their questions and doesn’t give them the run-around.
While I’ve always planned on two Master’s degrees, in the last couple years I’ve wanted to pursue a Doctorate of some kind. I would love to work towards a PhD in chemistry, specifically, but I don’t see that ever being a feasible goal with where I am in life. However, should the opportunity arise to go for an EdD through either a hybrid or online program, I would take a serious look at it. Pursuing a second Masters now will give me more experience and understanding to best prepare me for one day possibly working towards a doctorate degree.
